Orienteering Skills

Some of our scouts headed out on a local hike to practice orienteering skills. They need to learn this for 1st class rank. It was really cold and rainy, but that didn't stop them. Mr. Vedhan was a really good instructor, and they learned a lot.

First, we learned how to orient the compass on the map. Then we learned about adjusting the compass for true north vs magnetic north. We got our bearings, and we were ready to go.

For this hike, we were finding waypoints as we traveled around a local lake. Each time we found a point, we had to figure out the dirction to travel to get to the next one. At first, we were really slow. By the end, we could figure it out faster.
